What Cheflex does
The collection holds 1,814 recipes built from 241 ingredients across 130 world cuisines. Here’s what Cheflex does with them.
Household
Two phones, one household
One phone, the Captain, puts the meal plan together, and everyone else joins as a Teammate — all it takes is showing them a QR code. A Teammate sees what’s cooking, ticks off the shopping and gives meals their own thumbs: what one of you ticks off, the other won’t buy twice. The phones send each other their data encrypted, so the server can’t read it. Free, even without the full version. Android for now — the iPhone and iPad version is on its way.
One meal, everyone’s own target
You cook together, but each person has their own target — one is building muscle, another is losing fat. The app dishes up a portion for each of them that fits their own numbers as closely as possible.
Allergies and diets as an ingredient filter
Fourteen allergens, lactose intolerance on its own, plus vegetarian and vegan. A recipe with an ingredient you can’t have never makes it into the plan — and for a good number of recipes the app swaps the ingredient out instead of throwing the whole recipe away. The filter doesn’t read spices and condiments, so with a serious allergy always check the ingredients on the pack.
Food
Calories from ingredients, not guesswork
Energy and protein are worked out from what’s in each ingredient and how much of it lands on each plate. Not from a number typed at the bottom of a recipe.
You’re not cooking the same things over and over
A meal almost never comes back in the very next plan. After eating, rate it thumbs up or down: what you liked can come round again sooner, what you didn’t is switched off and won’t be offered until you switch it back on.
Food from all over, and still on target
130 cuisines from thirteen regions — the Mediterranean, Asia, India, Latin America, the Balkans, the Nordic countries, the British Isles and more. All of it from ingredients you can pick up in an ordinary supermarket; nothing has to be hunted down in a speciality shop. Eating for a target doesn’t have to mean chicken and rice five nights a week.
At the stove, on paper, on a tablet
At the stove mode shows just the method in big type. You can print the meal plan and the shopping list. And a tablet in the kitchen joins as a Mirror — it sees the whole household and ticks off the shopping.
Shopping
The shopping list is calculated, not typed
The list is the sum of the ingredients in the recipes you have planned, so the two can’t drift apart. For each item you say how much you already have, and the app takes it off what’s left to buy — the half bag of rice in the cupboard doesn’t get bought twice. Anything else you’re running low on you can add yourself, and your own items stay on the list even if you rebuild the plan.
Cooking on a shoestring
Turn on “On a budget” and the app builds your plan only from the cheapest dishes in the collection — no salmon, steak or prawns, and more eggs, beans and lentils, chicken and seasonal veg. Calories and protein stay on target; meals may just come round a little more often. The app doesn’t show prices: it knows what’s expensive, not what it costs in your shop.
It tells you the night before
For 100 recipes, something needs doing a day ahead — beans soaked, meat marinated, something left to defrost. The app says so the evening before: the day screen lists what to get ready for tomorrow, and that day carries a dot in the strip of days. The cooking itself then takes ten minutes — just not tonight.
Privacy
Your data stays on your phone
No account, no sign-up. What you enter stays on your phone, and the app carries no advertising or third-party analytics libraries. All that leaves is an anonymous count of which parts get used — and only if you switch it on yourself. When you pair phones with a Teammate, the data travels between them encrypted, so that not even I can read it.
Cooks with no signal
The recipes and the maths are on your phone. In a shop with no signal or up in the mountains with no Wi-Fi, the app works just the same. It only needs the internet to buy the full version, for the anonymous statistics if you switch them on, and to stay in sync with a Teammate.
